Title: Cartan’s Theory of Moving Frames

Location: V-155, VRII
Time: Thursday, April 10th, 15:00-16:00.

In 1999, Peter Olver and Mark Fels provided theoretical justification for Élie Cartan’s theory of moving frames for arbitrary, finite-dimensional Lie group actions on manifolds. With this basic machinery in hand, a plethora of new, unexpected and significant applications soon appeared in geometry, differential equations, computer vision, numerical analysis, the calculus of variations, classical invariant theory, and invariant flows. The lecture will demonstrate Olver and Fels’ construction of a moving frame and, if time permits, survey some of it’s applications.
