Research Scientist in Data Science

The Applied Mathematics Division at the Mathematics Department of the Science Institute, University of Iceland (see the mathematics division website), invites applications for a full-time position as a Research Scientist in Data Science.The Centre of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence will act as a hub for researchers at the University of Iceland with expertise in data science and artificial intelligence. The Center aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration both within the University and with the industry by: Maintaining an information portal featuring the Center’s researchers and their expertise related to data science and artificial intelligence. Offering accessible communication channels for stakeholders inside and outside the University to propose collaborative or consulting projects. Organizing regular seminars, educational sessions, and working groups on data science and artificial intelligence for the public, graduate students, and researchers.

Field of work

The Research Scientist will direct the Centre of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Iceland, conduct research in statistics or applied mathematics, teach courses in data science within the mathematics program, and supervise graduate students.

The Research Scientist is expected to lead the strategic planning of the Center, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, attract funding, conduct outstanding research, supervise graduate students, and strengthen connections with the industry, the public, and international collaborators.  The main tasks and duties will be divided into 50% research, 30% management, and 20% teaching.

Qualification requirements

  • Ph.D. in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Research activity at the international level.
  • Experience in obtaining research grants is desirable.
  • Experience supervising graduate students is desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Icelandic is desirable.

When hiring, emphasis will be placed on how well the candidate’s experience and qualifications align with the needs of the Science Institute and the proposed focus areas of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Center.

The expected start date is May 1, 2024, contingent upon the completion of the evaluation process.

Applicants must list up to eight of their most important publications relevant to the position. Copies of these publications should be submitted with the application or a reference provided to their location online. For publications with multiple authors, applicants must specify their contribution. Non-electronic application materials must be submitted in duplicate to the Division of Science and Innovation, University of Iceland, Main Building, Sæmundargata 2, 101 Reykjavik, Iceland.

The successful candidate will be hired for five years with the possibility of a permanent contract after this period, cf. paragraph 3, Article 31 of the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.

Processing of applications, evaluation of qualifications, and hiring will be in accordance with the Act on Public Higher Education Institutions no. 85/2008 and the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.
